Reliability is the thing people care about most once the novelty of a new plan wears off. Speed numbers look good on the box, but what you actually notice day to day is whether the connection stays up, whether it drops out during the evening, and how long it takes to come back when it does.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We have been collecting reviews from real Australian broadband customers since 2004. Every reviewer rates their provider on reliability out of 5, separately from speed, value and support. That gives us something the marketing pages can’t: a reliability score for each provider based on what their own customers actually experienced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is the ranking for the NBN era. To keep the comparison fair we only count reviews from November 2018 onwards, which is when NBN review numbers got big enough to mean something, and we only rank a provider once it has at least 10 reviews. Below 10 the average swings around too much on a single bad week. The most reliable NBN providers right now<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Here is how the providers rank on reliability, best first. The score is the average reliability rating out of 5 from real reviews in the NBN era. “Partner” means the provider runs an affiliate program with us, which is worth being upfront about. More on what that does and doesn’t mean further down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The top three<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Aussie Broadband sits on top with a 4.54 reliability score across 113 reviews, which is the biggest review base of any provider in the NBN era, so that number is about as solid as they get. One reviewer in New South Wales this year summed up the common theme: “rock solid reliability, fast transfer, Australian helpdesk and support.” Aussie Broadband isn’t the cheapest, but the reviews are consistent on this point year after year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Superloop is right behind on 4.52 from 42 reviews. It has climbed quickly since 2021 and the reliability scores have held up as the review count has grown, which is a good sign. “Good and reliable connection” comes up again and again in the comments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tangerine rounds out the top three on 4.38. It has fewer reviews (16) so the score carries a bit more uncertainty, but the pattern is the same: people stay because the connection is steady and it costs less than most. As one Queensland reviewer put it, “reliable connection, easy to connect, more affordable than most other companies.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The middle of the pack<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Telstra (4.03), Optus (3.98) and Belong (3.94) sit in a cluster around the 4 mark. These are the big retail names, and the reliability scores are decent without being class leading. Belong runs on the Telstra network, which shows in a similar reliability result. Internode and Mate follow close behind, both with smaller but loyal review bases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

iiNet (3.68) and TPG (3.63) are worth a mention. Both have large review counts in the 50 to 70 range, so the scores are solid, and both land mid table. They are part of the same group now, and the reviews read similarly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bottom of the table<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Dodo (3.11) and SpinTel (3.27) sit at the bottom on reliability. SpinTel has a smaller review base (14) so treat it with a bit more caution, but Dodo’s 3.11 comes from 22 reviews and matches a long running pattern in our data. About the partners<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The top three providers on this list all run affiliate programs with us, and you deserve to know that. It does not change the scores. Reviewers have no idea which providers we earn a commission from when they write a review, and we don’t touch the numbers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The honest explanation is that we partner with providers that already review well, not the other way around. We don’t go looking for the worst rated companies to promote. There are well rated providers on this list that aren’t partners. Telstra and Optus both score above 3.9, and there are partners that sit mid table, with Exetel down in 11th. What reliability actually means for you<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A reliability score of 4.5 versus 3.1 is the difference between a connection you forget about and one you think about every time you sit down to stream something in the evening. It’s not about peak speed. A provider can sell you a 100\/20 plan and still score badly on reliability if the connection drops out or slows to a crawl when everyone in your street gets home from work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reliability is one piece of the picture. We rank the same providers two other ways from the same review data: best for customer and tech support<\/a>, and most recommended by their own customers<\/a>. Reading all three together is the best way to choose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Based on real user reviews in the NBN era, Aussie Broadband is the most reliable, with a 4.54 reliability score out of 5 across 113 reviews. Superloop (4.52) and Tangerine (4.38) follow close behind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every reviewer rates their provider on reliability out of 5, separately from speed, value and support. The score here is the average of those reliability ratings for reviews from November 2018 onwards. A provider needs at least 10 reviews to appear. No. Reviewers don’t know which providers we earn commission from, and we don’t adjust the scores. We partner with providers that already review well, which is why some partners rank highly, but non-partners like Telstra and Optus also score above 3.9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why isn’t my provider on the list?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

We only rank providers with at least 10 reviews in the NBN era. Smaller providers don’t yet have enough reviews for a fair score. You can still read whatever reviews exist on their company page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
